The following set of tips was composed to provide you with guidelines to help you acquire a general perception of the game's strategy. We advise you bear these tips in mind and apply them according to your discretion, considering the specific situation you are confronted with. Please note the tips are ordered in an arbitrary manner.
Deck - in Gin Rummy there is a single deck of cards. This means that if a player picked up a card you need or discard it while you cannot pick it up, you will not be able to get it anytime soon. Therefore, in cases such as this one, you want to reconsider the melds in your hand and maybe pass on some options. This way, you will not be waiting for a card that might not show again.
Drawing - Drawing the right cards when playing online Gin Rummy is the number one skill to affect the outcome of the game the most.
When drawing a card at the beginning of the game, it is advisable that you pick a card from the stock pile rather then the discard pile. This way, your online Rummy opponents will find it difficult to keep track of the cards in your hand. Keeping your hand a secret as long as possible will be worth your while later on. In addition, since the cards on top of the discard pile are cards that your online Rummy opponents do not need, when drawing a card from the stock pile, you might be preventing them from forming melds.
Discard - Discarding the right cards is not a matter to be taken lightly also. When throwing away cards, your first priority is to get rid of cards that are of no use to you. Moreover, you want to throw away cards that are of no use to your online Rummy opponent. To do so, simply note which cards your opponents discard.
Most of the players tend to get rid of high-value cards in their hand to reduce their deadwood count. You might want to take advantage of that, forming melds of higher cards, having an easy time picking them up from the discard pile.
Pay Attention To - One of the keynotes in online Gin Rummy is constant vigilance. Be alert to the cards your online Gin Rummy opponents discard and pick. This gives you the benefit of knowing which cards their hands consist of.
High\Low Draws - Since a standard Gin Rummy game ends at about half way through the deck, it is best to draw high-value cards at the beginning of the game, in hopes to obtain the matching ones during the game. When approaching this point, you are advised to throw away the high-value cards assembling your deadwood, by either replacing them with low-value cards from the discard pile or taking your chances with the stock pile. *note, in case you suspect that your online Rummy opponent is about to knock or gin, you want to pick up a low-value from the discard pile and discard a high-value card, to reduce the total count of your deadwood.
Knock - During a tournament, it is best to catch your online Rummy opponents off guard and accumulate points by knocking, rather than waiting for a Gin. In ring games and tournaments alike, it is best to knock early during the game, to avoid the risk of undercut.
Having achieved a significant advantage over your opponents in previous rounds of a multi-round tournament, you do not want to take any risks. Calculate your moves in a manner that will help to maintain the current status quo.
Forming Melds - Another great Gin tip concerns the melds. When forming your melds you want to emphasis the four-card sets, rather than consecutive meld, and this way you are preventing your online Rummy opponents from laying off their deadwood attaching it to your meld.
Try to draw and discard cards in a manner that will provide you with a lot of opportunities to complete pairs into melds. For example: the unmelded cards in your hand are:
,
,
,
. Discarding the
will leave you with more opportunities to meld the rest of the cards.
Ring Games - In ring games the players do not accumulate points. You might want to wait for a Gin in these games, for this move rewards you with more money.
